NCLE Exam in a Week: A 7-Day Final Review Plan

ABO-NCLE lists the NCLE content areas but does not recommend a study length. In the final week, diagnose with one timed set, then drill vertex conversion and keratometry by hand and check them with our free tools, review terminology, take one full timed practice test, and keep the last day light.

Last checked . Confirm fees and dates with the certifying body. optical.education is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the American Board of Opticianry and National Contact Lens Examiners (ABO-NCLE). Disclaimer.

This covers the last seven days. For a longer plan, see how to study for the NCLE.

Diagnose first

Take one timed set from our free NCLE practice tests and tag each miss with its content area. ABO-NCLE lists the areas on its Basic exam page; format and fees are on the NCLE registration page (both checked Nov 2, 2026).

Vertex day

Hand-solve first with Fc = F ÷ (1 − dF), d in meters, then check in the vertex distance calculator. One warm-up: −6.00 D at 12 mm gives −6.00 ÷ 1.072 = −5.60, so −5.50 D to the nearest quarter. Converting toric lenses one meridian at a time is covered in the vertex distance guide.

K-readings day

Work the keratometer simulator, then convert by hand: 7.80 mm is 337.5 ÷ 7.80 = 43.27 D; 45.00 D is 337.5 ÷ 45.00 = 7.50 mm. The smaller radius is the steeper meridian. Background is in keratometry basics.

Terminology day

Use NCLE terminology and the formula list on NCLE exam formulas.

No fitting experience?

  • Ask a coworker who fits lenses to show you a trial-lens evaluation and a follow-up visit, even once.
  • For each fit sign you study (centration, movement, edge), say out loud what change you would expect the fitter to make.
  • Spend more of day 4 on follow-up care and complications if those were your misses.

Readiness check

A self-check, not a prediction. Pass rates and scoring are on how hard is the NCLE.

  • I can vertex a toric lens by hand in each meridian.
  • I can convert K values both ways without a reference.
  • My day-6 misses are spread out, not piled in one area.

Frequently asked questions

What should I study the week before the NCLE?

The content areas where your timed practice set showed the most misses, plus two hands-on skills that people who don’t fit lenses often miss: vertex conversion and reading K values. ABO-NCLE lists the content areas on its exam pages.

How should I practice keratometry before the NCLE?

Use the keratometer simulator until you can align the mires and read both meridians without hesitating. Then convert each reading between millimeters and diopters by hand (337.5 ÷ radius in mm) and say which meridian is steeper.

How many practice tests should I take before the NCLE?

There is no official number. In a final week, one full timed test, fully reviewed, is worth more than several rushed ones. Use shorter sets for the content areas you are weakest in.

What should I do the night before the NCLE exam?

Stop new material. Read your own short formula and terms list once, confirm your appointment, ID and route, and sleep. The check-in rules are on our exam-day guide.
